How To Be Led By The Spirit

Hello there. It is so good to be writing to you today. It gives me joy to know that major issues in your life are addressed through this blog and I pray this will be another testimony.

Last week, we started with hearing the voice of God but ended with an agreement that it is better to pursue being led by Him. If you missed that edition, you can click here to read it.

There are no techniques to hear the voice of God as a believer. However, there are things to consider if you will be led by the Spirit of God and that is what I want to talk about today; How to be led by the Spirit.

Let me mention that, firstly, this post is not to line up methods for you, instead it is for you to receive grace to live. Secondly, all I write is not all there is to being led, as you study and walk with God, you will be opened up to more.

Shall we?

It has always been the desire of God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ to be one with us, the kind of oneness that sex in marriage only explains but a little… The highest form of communion where there is a knitting of souls. For this reason, He prepared, by the blood of Jesus Christ, for himself your body and He gave you His Spirit… This Holy Spirit is who leads you into all Truth.

It is my belief that when two people can understand and communicate with each other in silence, there has been a heavy investment in communion over time.

This is what God wants to achieve with us, however our hearts are so clouded that it is difficult for him to lead us by impulse and so we begin to seek His voice as though it is one of the opinions to be considered when making decisions.

Let me reiterate “God wants to lead you and so He sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in you”.

So what we should be asking ourselves and seeking is how to be led by the Spirit.

How to be led by the Spirit

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

A Relationship is needed if there will be a leading (Amos 3:3). I believe then that the level of intimacy determines the extent of leading. So this post, “How to be led by the Spirit”, is targeted at addressing your intimacy and I pray the Lord will release grace to you for a more intimate walk with Him.

1. The Lordship

You see, to have Jesus as saviour and as Lord is one package. However, many have separated it. “He’s saviour of my life and I am Lord” this is what many people say, not orally but with how they live.

“To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.”

Listen, His blood did not just “set you free”, it purchased you from the bondage of the devil… Not to wander around… But to be the righteousness of the Father.

You must therefore hearken to Him brethren. You must give yourself to Him as Lord.

When He calls you, “Mary”, you may turn towards the voice but can you truly respond, “Rabboni“?

Look again at the scripture above… “… He calleth his own…” and so because the sheep know their master, they answer and they are Led out.

Beloved, let’s stop holding back from God. Let us give ourselves totally to Him as Master… In tears let us repent of our pride of leading our own lives and submit it to Him. Come, recognize and also acknowledge that the blood bought you, ye are not your own. Give up all of you.

Don’t give up the part of you that is sinful and makes you guilty so He can correct it and take away the guilt from you. Definitely not the good part That He may reward… No!!! “…Ye are not your own…” and “…give to God what is God’s”.

He can’t lead you if you’ve not relinquished control.

2. Give yourself to Learning

It’s funny how you and I focus so much on hearing the voice of God yet ignore the one He inspired Holy men to write… What we know as The Bible.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

When people make decisions, whether they know it or not, whether they like it or not, whether they agree or not, they are being influenced by something they were taught and they have learnt consciously or not.

You must understand that men are not naturally led by voices but by their consciousness (conscience, will, desire, etc) which is formed by instructions received, observation, exposure, etc. (I’m trying to keep it simple).

It therefore behoves the believer who was once born into ungodliness and taught or learnt, consciously or unconsciously, in the same manner, to consciously give himself to learning the ways of God… To learning the way of righteousness by giving himself to and studying the Word, that he may be renewed (Romans 12:2). It is by your renewal that the excellence of God is proclaimed. The Word changes… Remember we have emphasized this over the past weeks.

Therefore, give yourself to the Word, it is with this that you will be led by the Spirit. If you don’t give yourself to the word, you will not recognize His leading because you are not His student (1samuel 3:7).

Keep the word at the center of your heart, exalt it above all else, let it determine your decisions, think on it. Gloria and Kenneth Copeland are known to often say that one of the ways to be led by the Spirit is to put the word of God above all else.

This is telling us His word is needed for the leading and guiding. His word can so lead and cause cleansing within you that your sense of judgment is made righteous, you can easily pick when your decision is not in accordance with righteousness…discernment.

3. Meeting Place

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD.

As you give yourself to learning the ways of God, it is important you are having a personal relationship with the Person through the platform of prayer. Many times in the place of prayer direction is gotten.
It was when Habakkuk, in Habakkuk 2:1-2, was watching that he got the instruction to write the vision and make it plain.

Sometimes, it is in the place of prayer that the heart is searched and an evil way is found, confession is made and repentance is effected which involves learning what the God’s way concerning that matter is.

As simple as going on your knees and asking God for guidance, is you asking to be led by God.

The consistency with your meeting cannot be overemphasized. Remember I said the level of intimacy of the relationship determines the extent to which you can be led. Prayer keeps you in the will of God… It builds up. I believe it makes leading easier for you.

Have you been consistent? Have you been faithful? Why not start now, pick a time of the day when you meet with God privately… Pray with all kinds of prayer in the spirit. You can begin with 30 minutes and move up from there.

Giving yourself to the study of the word and to prayer also purifies your thought and this helps you know when you are being led. Let me tell you the beautiful part; beyond knowing when He’s leading you, your daily fellowship breaks walls in your heart. You daily lose your ability to say “No” to God’s leading because, you see, fellowship involves surrender, learning, praying And the last one is what I want to talk about.

4. Faith with Works.

Works without faith is the law and it kills and Faith without work is dead, it doesn’t save.

Listen, this is the kind of faith that makes you do. This is the kind of faith that makes you obey.

You were probably already thinking “Rowland, you’ve not said anything about faith. Is it not suppose to be the first?”

That thought above is the error that has met the body of Christ. The kind of faith needed to be led to all Truth is not conjured by you. It must come to you.

Faith that is of God comes to you after you have surrendered, you have given yourself to learning and communion. Have you asked yourself what really made men like the 3 Hebrew boys stand the threat of the fiery furnace? Do you really think it was man made faith? No sir, an ordinary man loves himself too much but hear this testimony of faithful men “they loved not their life to shrink from death”…Ayyyaaaaaa!!!… This kind of faith, the kind of faith that is needed to be led to the fiery furnace, to be led into lands unknown, to be led into all truth is imputed. It must come!!!

The kind of faith that comes by true surrender without knowledge of what the faith really holds, by giving yourself to learning the righteousness of God from scriptures, by consistently praying and communing, is the kind of faith that never fails if you are patient. It is never wrong.

Let me conclude this edition with this, “The person is always changed when they give themselves to being Led”. What do I mean by this? Your journey of fellowship changes your person… Then your life begins to declare the excellence of God.

Beloved, with your heart, give yourself to the journey into all Truth. Surrender, learn, pray and obey.
