Graven Images and the 21st Century

You may be wondering why I’m talking to you, a Christian, about graven images in such a time as this.

Listen, civilization doesn’t change idolatry, it only changes the form of its worship.

This is true, there are few civilized nation on the earth today where they bow down to graven images. The worship of images; A bottle, a stone, a tree, all these things really exist where the darkness of primitivity is the light of the people.

Does this mean that civilization is the cure for the second commandment of the maker of the heavens and earth? No!!! If anything, civilization is the perfect front and disguise for idolatry to thrive.

Civilization can successfully take away the physical images but leave the spirit of idolatry intact. This is dangerous.

Exodus 20:4 (KJV)
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”

So, in our generation, civilization having taken out the moulding of images, what is the graven image we have that makes us bend our backs to idolatry?

The graven image is the idea of who we think God should be. This is formed by our own lusts.

Read that again

I see young people say that God is so loving so He understands why they have to keep fornicating. Some will tell you that God is so good He keeps on providing for them even when they live in sin. They say God is not petty, so He doesn’t mind me stealing from the abundance of my greedy and evil boss. We have created a God in our minds that accommodates our lusts, failings and frailties.

This “God” we have made… A “God” made by human hands… Or should I say “human mind”… is a graven image!!!

Listen to me, God must be revealed to and in you for you to worship (living sacrifice) in spirit and truth. God is only represented by His word in us not our imaginations or an image imprinted on our minds from a picture or movie.

What am I saying? You may have believed in the gospel doesn’t mean you can’t live in idolatry. Any human on earth who is not given to the learning of the nature and way of God is either already walking in idolatry or is a major candidate for the spirit of idolatry though they are counted amongst those who are “called by God’s name”.

Listen, you can’t assume what God’s love is like by using human standards. He already taught us that our ways are not His ways. So, God’s love expresses itself in the judgment of sin through the death of His son. You and I wouldn’t have thought that as a loving act if Jesus didn’t get up after three days. Even after He resurrected, up till this day, some still think that was a silly thing God did.

Look, at the end of the age, whether they believe it or not, some will perish in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone and that doesn’t take away an iota of God’s loving nature and the love He has for those people.

Therefore Adelphoi, this is what we must do to escape this subtle patronage of the graven image of our generation, having believed, we give ourselves, we commit ourselves to “the Apostles’ teachings” as said in Acts 2:42.

For us, this doesn’t mean listen to messages by people called “Apostle”. It means study the letters of the Apostles and even the “Apostles” from the time of Abraham. Listen to teachings of the word of righteousness. Share fellowship with brethren and converse with them. This way, the lord reveals Himself to you and you know the God, maker of the heavens and earth and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
