Easily Besetting Sin

Good news precious reader!!!

Ancient word will be two years on Sunday, 5th June, 2022 and I’m grateful to God for the privilege to send His message to you through my typing fingers.

I also think if you’ve been blessed by these posts, you should take some time to say “Thank you Lord for your instructions you’ve sent to me through this blog.”

Last week,I mentioned something in passing but I understood later that God was opening my eyes to understand it better and I think it’s important to share with you.

Today, I write to you first to correct then to direct your heart to the root of all things that are wrong and evil.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Quite sincerely, for a long time, I unconsciously read the word “sin” as “sins”… You might relate… Also there’s the possibility of assuming that the “sin” there refers to that one particular habit or work or act of the flesh you really want to stop. It only makes sense to think that the sin you always find yourself falling into is the easily besetting sin. You find anger is the one thing you find hard to overcome, it only makes sense that is the easily besetting sin. Maybe yours is covetousness.

But I looked at some things and realized, after being pointed towards it by the Holy Spirit, that this is not what is meant in the book of Hebrews by “easily besetting sin“.

First thing I looked at was the singularity of the word “sin“. Now, to think that this means an act of sin that easily causes you to fall is to have a prideful view of yourself and a wrong view of how God deals with the acts of sin in our lives (which I can’t explain now).

Another thing I looked at is the context of the statement. A letter written to the Hebrews who have come into the faith from a legalistic religion and while in the faith have been fed with wrong doctrines. Understanding therefore the weight and sin that easily besets man, especially in this case a Jew, the writer warns.

So, what is the writer of the book of Hebrews telling us to do?

Listen, on the day of judgement, no one will be judged because they have a sinful nature. They will be judged because they do not believe in the Son.

To a man who has heard the gospel, unbelief becomes the sin that will make you stumble.

This is the sin that easily besets man. The sin of unbelief!! This was what was spoken about in the book of Hebrews, not the acts of sin.

Every act of sin by one who has come to the knowledge of Christ commits comes from unbelief. He hasn’t given himself fully to the truth.

There’s more scriptural evidences to show that unbelief is the real sin but I don’t want to exceed the space so let me just go further to speak directly to you.

Adelphoi, unbelief is everywhere around us. Unbelief surrounds us like a garment (which is technically the Hebrew word for “entangle”).

Everything the devil throws at you, every temptation, every trial is to the end that your faith is undermined and you cannot keep giving in to them. You can not drink of the spirit of unbelief. If you truly believe, the Bible says, we will keep ourselves pure.

How then do we drink of the spirit of faith? It is through continuous study and prayer.

Shalom adelphoi
